 Campbell Live in Akaroa - 23rd February 2012 - TV3

Homegrown weed or multimillion dollar seaweed industry?  Campbell Live visited with Roger Beattie in the beautiful harbour of Akaroa to take a look at his Marine Farm and hear why New Zealand should be farming and harvesting Undaria (Wakame) commercially.

Roger Beattie is already sustainably harvesting New Zealand's richest kelp - giant kelp, producing a top quality organically certified dried kelp product (NZ Kelp) for both human consumption and for use in agriculture and horticulture.  He would also like to see MAF lift restrictions for Undaria (Wakame) to be commercially farmed and harvested in NZ waters, so it can be exported to countries like Japan and Korea where it is highly sort after.

Wakame is used in lots of Asian cuisine including miso soup, sushi & salads, and in Japan the seaweed business is a multibillion dollar industry.

View the episode - the video coverage starts at 9.10 minutes.
